Taxation

Australia - Australian Taxation Office

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is responsible for taxes in Australia.  Like New Zealand, all employees are required to apply for a tax number and if this is not supplied employers are able to tax employees at the highest rate.  Employees can only apply for tax numbers on arrival in Australia.  Applications can be made on-line (but only on arrival):- http://www.ato.gov.au/individuals/content.asp?doc=/content/38760.htm or by completing form available at post offices.  The Australian tax year is from 1 July until 30 June.
